Samsung has confirmed its plans for Tizen Smart TV sets at the Tizen Developer Conference.
At the San Francisco-based conference, Samsung demoed a 65-inch Tizen TV with a content-led interface and remote control system that works on any smartphone.
Using this remote control app, you can even use your phone as a pointer for controlling the on-screen cursor to select content.
The beta version of the Tizen TV software comes with a Smart Interaction feature too, which lets you use voice and gesture controls to navigate the interface. Multi-screen options will also be available when the TV set launches later this year.
Samsung will launch an SDK for the Tizen TV in July, letting developers tailor existing apps and create new ones for the upcoming platform.
Although Samsung has been heavily associated with Android for some time; the South Korean electronics giant is developing Tizen in conjunction with Intel as an alternative for over two years.
The operating system has already been brought to consumer attention with the Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Fit, launched at MWC in February.
These wearables, along with the newly updated original Samsung Galaxy Gear, will work with the upcoming Tizen TVs as well.
Samsung has also just launched its first Tizen-powered smartphone, the Samsung Z.
It comes with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720p HD resolution powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core CPU with 2GB or RAM. Internal storage started at 16GB, expandable by microSD card to an additional 64GB.
In the rear is an 8-megapixel camera and the Samsung Z even comes with the fingerprint sensor technology of the flagship Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S5.
“The Tizen platform delivers a fast, optimal performance with improved memory management,” said Samsung.
The company also claims the operating system provides a “fast start-up time”, “immediate multi-tasking capabilities”, “smoother scrolling” and “an improved rendering performance for web browsing”.
