Samsung has finally given us an official tidbit with regards the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3. Officially unveiling its new processor, the 1.4GHz Exynos 4, the company revealed this chip would be powering the 'next Galaxy' being announced at an event on May 3rd.

The new chip's CPUs use the older Cortex A9 ARM architecture rather than the newer Cortex A15 as seen on the HTC One S, but it's still expected to be a very fast chip. Indeed Samsung claims the chip will be twice as fast as its 45nm predecessor yet draw 20 percent less power.

Benchmarks showing the performance of its GPU were leaked last week and it has shot to the top of the performance pile, by some distance, as you can see below.

The chip will also be capable of full 30fps 1080p video playback and recording, has an embedded image signal processor interface and an interface for HDMI 1.4.

Built on a 32nm High-K Metal Gate process it will feature per-core voltage and frequency scaling for excellent power management. The Exynos 4 Quad will also be pin-to-pin compatible with the Exynos 4 Dual, something that Samsung believes will make it easier for manufacturers to implement the new chip on upcoming phones.

Samsung has also released a promotional video for the Exynos 4:
