Samsung bringing back the flip phone with Galaxy Folder

Samsung is bringing back the once-ubiquitous flip phone form factor in the shape of a mid-range Android smartphone dubbed the Galaxy Folder.

That’s according to a manual discovered by Japanese blog Ringer’s Blue Men on Samsung’s own website. The PDF file is dated July 2013, and is labelled as version 1.0.

As you can see from the main image, this is a pretty traditional-looking flip phone complete with a numeric keypad and an eight-way thumb-pad on one surface and a small display on the other. However, there are a number of mentions of various Google services in English (the manual is largely in Korean, as you might expect) indicating that the Galaxy Folder runs on Android.

One other interesting point of differentiation from older flip phones – and a nod to the current smartphone scene – is the presence of a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 AMOLED touchscreen on the outside of the device.

Driving home that modern mid-range feel, the Samsung Galaxy Folder appears to be powered by a  1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, which is backed by a healthy 2GB of RAM. It also supports 4G LTE.

Details are understandably sketchy at present, and it’s unclear whether we’ll ever see the Samsung Galaxy Folder outside of its native South Korea. Still, it’s nice to see this blast from the past – even if its purpose seems questionable outside of nostalgic gimmick-value.
