Samsung Ativ Tab Windows 8 RT tablet gets UK price

The Samsung Ativ Tab has received a price in the UK through online retailer Clove. While it’s far from final, it could hint at the general pricing for the cut-down Windows 8 RT tablet range.

Head over to the retail website and you’ll be able to pre-order the 32GB Samsung Ativ Tab for £457.50. Yes, that’s around £20 cheaper than the equivalent 32GB iPad model.

Of course, the Samsung Ativ Tab falls behind the iPad in a couple of respects - chiefly when it comes to its 10.1-inch screen. With a resolution of 1,366 x 768, it’s decidedly last-gen when compared to the iPad’s Retina display.

You also won’t find the same level of build quality or finish as Apple’s popular tablet. It’ll run on a capable but far-from-cutting-edge 1.5GHz dual-core CPU.

The Samsung Ativ Tab might sound a little pricey, then, but bear in mind the true distinctive selling point of the device - the Windows 8 OS. Even in its RT state this promises to be the one tablet OS that’s been built from the ground up with tablets in mind.

The Ativ Tab is also an uncommonly well connected device, with a microSD memory card slot, miniHDMI video output and NFC all added to the package (none of which can be found on the iPad).

It weighs a relatively scant 570 grams and sports a 5-megapixel camera.

We’re still a little concerned that this price - if it proves final - will be too high to attract many buyers given the mid-range specs and materials. We’ll know for sure if this is correct - and indeed indicative of the whole Windows 8 RT range - come October 26.
