Samsung ATIV S announced – 4.8in Windows Phone 8 mobile

Andrew Williams by

Samsung has officially unveiled the ATIV S, the company’s first phone to run the new Windows Phone 8 operating system. While we’re yet to find out the full deal on what Windows Phone 8 is all about, the Samsung ATIV V does tell us a few important bits and bobs.

Microsoft’s tight restrictions on Windows Phone 7 mobiles’ hardware seem to have dissipated. The Samsung ATIV S features a microSD slot, letting you increase storage easily, and has an HD-resolution screen. Neither would have been possible with Windows Phone 7.

The Samsung ATIV S screen is 4.8in across and uses the contrast-rich Super AMOLED display type - making it roughly the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S3. It’s powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor. This is not class-leading in pure power terms but doubtless enough to keep Windows Phone 8 ticking along nicely. Other specs include an 8-megapixel main camera, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal memory and a 2,300mAh battery.

Just 8.7mm thick too, the Samsung ATIV S’s design is pretty competitive with the best Android phones have to offer. The only question to ask now is – will Windows Phone 8 be any good? Because this phone’s hardware certainly seems to come up with the goods.
