Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus and Book 9 Lite unveiled as MacBook Air rivals

Samsung has unveiled a pair of new super slim ultrabooks, with the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus and less glamorous Book 9 Lite lining up as competitors to Apple’s latest MacBook Air.

Following on from past Series 9 ultrabook offerings, the pair of new, Windows 8 powered machines each support 13.3-inch touchscreen displays with 10-finger multitouch and Samsung Side Sync connectivity options that let you use your smartphone as a second screen.

“These new products offer our customers even more choice, as well as added convenience allowing them to stay connected at all times, wherever they are,” Simon Stanford, Vice President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics UK & Ireland said.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus Features
A true challenger to the market leading MacBook Air, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus is a high-end offering which pairs a collection of premium innards with a sleek, stylish design.

Measuring in at just 13.6mm thick and 1.39kg in weight, the ATIV Book 9 Plus is only little fatter than some smartphones or tablets, and wraps this elegant, brushed metal finish around a claimed 12 hour battery life, ensuring you are covered for a full day’s usage.

With the ultrabook’s vibrant touchscreen display boasting a 3200 x 1800p QHD panel, further highlights of the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus specs sheet include a quad-core CPU (the option of Core i5 or i7) and a stunningly fast 5.9 second boot time. What’s more, it has suggested the device will wake from sleep more in just 0.9 seconds.

Adding a new touchpad interface and slim locking slot for added security over past models, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus’ party piece is that it features a 180-degree hinge, allowing the device to be opened up completely flat if so desired.

Further Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus specs see Intel 4400 HD Graphics make the cut alongside 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. An integrated camera capable of capturing 720p HD video content sits on the device’s fore while connectivity is handled by a pair of USB 3.0 ports, microHDMI and mini VGA options.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite Features
Trading in the Plus’ metal form factor for a more wallet-friendly plastic build, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite is set to offer similar design and performance benefits as its big brother, just at a more reasonable price point.

Set to be made available in both white and ‘ash black’ colour schemes, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite runs a 1.4GHz quad-core CPU and pairs this considerable grunt with 4GB and a 128GB SSD for sizeable, fast-access storage options.

Lining up at just 16.9mm thick, the Lite is considerable chunkier that the Plus but retains many of the same curved, elegant and premium design traits. It weighs in at 1.44kg.

Tipped to support still reasonably speedy 8 second boot times and 2 second wake times, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite has reportedly been bestowed with a 8.5 hour battery life.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus Release Date and Price
With neither product yet priced, a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus release date has so far been pegged only as ‘later this year’. The Book 9 Lite is to follow shortly after.
