Samsung announces portable SSD T1

Samsung has announced a new addition to its SSD lineup in the shape of the Samsung SSD T1, a solid state drive wrapped up in a compact portable package.

Conventional 2.5in SSD drives are inherently portable thanks to being relatively small and rugged, and easy to connect to a computer using a SATA to USB adapter, but the SSD T1 takes things a step further.

For a start, its case is more stylish and tougher and incorporates a conventional microUSB 3.0 connection, so there’s no need for an adapter anymore. The storage can also resist shocks of up to 1500G/0.5ms and has thermal protection called Dynamic Thermal Guard, which will prevent data corruption in extreme temperature conditions.

It also includes in-built 256-bit AES encryption that means the whole drive can be locked and unlocked with a single password.

With dimensions of 71.0 x 9.2 x 53.2mm, the SSD T1 isn’t much smaller than a conventional 2.5in drive but it’s still compact and the whole thing weighs just 30g.

Samsung SSD T1

Crucial to the drive’s appeal is Samsung’s core SSD technology, which is among the fastest and most cost effective available. It’s built on Samsung’s 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology, which stacks nand vertically, allowing for greater data density and fast data transfer speeds. Samsung claims transfer speeds of up to 450MB/s for the range of drives.

“Our digital lives demand storage that surpasses the limits of existing options, which requires consumers to compromise, when it comes to mobility, capacity, security and performance. The Portable SSD T1 overcomes the drawbacks of alternative options on every major pain point, making it the next external storage device of choice,” said Unsoo Kim, Senior Vice President of Branded Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics.

Arriving imminently, the range will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities with prices starting at £154.79.
