Samsung has refreshed its NX range of compact system cameras with the launch of the NX20 and NX210. The NX20 is the successor to last year’s NX11 and brings with it a host of hardware and feature upgrades.

Physically, the new model is similar to its predecessor and retains the mini-DSLR form factor, although the rear monitor has been improved. Whereas the NX11 offered a fixed 3in, 461k-dot AMOLED screen, the NX20 upgrades to a vari-angle Clear AMOLED monitor with a resolution of 821k-dots. Clear AMOLED refers to the process whereby a UV resin has been injected into the gap between the glass cover and the panel to cut down on unwanted reflections. The NX20’s electronic viewfinder has also received a boost and now offers a resolution of 1.44m-dots compared to 920k-dots on the NX11.

The big addition for both models, however, is Wi-Fi functionality. This innovative feature was first seen on the SH100 compact last year and basically allows you to send image files directly fro your camera to a home computer or to Android phones/tablets and compatible TVs. You can also use the Wi-Fi to upload your images directly to Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage service, or to email them directly from your camera. Last but not least, Android users can download an app from the Google Play store which will enable them to take full control of the camera via their smartphone or tablet.

In addition to the NX20 Samsung has also unveiled a minor update to its NX200, in the shape of the NX210. It has the same 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, the same body shape and a similar 3in AMOLED display. The main differences between the two models are the addition of Wi-Fi functionality along with a bump in the top burst speed to 8fps (as opposed to 7fps on the NX11). Internally, both the NX20 and NX210 use the same 20.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor that was used to such good effect in the NX200 we tested a few months ago.

Both cameras will be available from mid May, with the Samsung NX20 priced at £899 with an 18-55mm kit zoom. The NX210, meanwhile, will set you back £749 with the 18-55 kit lens.
