Samsung announces all-in-one Exynos 8 chip

Samsung has announced its next-generation Smartphone processor, the Exynos 8.

Earlier this year, the Samsung Galaxy S6 wowed with its blisteringly fast, custom Exynos 7 chip. It pretty much wiped the floor with the competition at the time in pure performance terms.

Now Samsung has outlined its plans to do the same with the Exynos 8 Octa 8890. It’s built on 14nm FinFET tech, like the Exynos 7, but it has one notable advantage.

The Exynos 8 is built on a single integrated chip, combining the application processor with the modem. This serves to simplify things for handset manufacturers, reducing the number of components and the amount of space required within the tight confines of a modern smartphone chassis.

The Exynos 8’s 64-bit ARMv8 architecture enables a 30% performance boost over the already nippy Exynos 7, and it’s also 10% more efficient. On the GPU side, there’s ARM’s latest Mali-T880 offering.

Elsewhere, the integrated LTE Rel.12 Cat.12/13 modem enables download speeds of up to 600Mbps and upload speeds of up to 150Mbps using carrier aggregation.

Samsung intends to begin mass production of the Exynos 8 chip in late 2015, which means that it should be ready in time for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S7 in early 2016.
