Sainsbury’s has announced it will cease the sale of boxed games and consoles via its website, and will only offer them in store.
The UK supermarket will stop selling physical entertainment products online in favour of an on-demand digital model.
Sale of physical products via the Sainsbury’s Entertainment website will be non-existent from March 2014.
Along with videogames and consoles, Sainsbury’s Entertainment’s new digital model will apply to books, DVDs, CDs, and Blu-rays.
“We see that the online opportunity lies in digital products, with physical music, books, games and films sold in our stores”, said a Sainsbury’s spokesperson. “This move is in line with wider industry trends towards on demand entertainment, and part of our focus on the fast-growing download and streaming market.”
Sainsbury’s will continue to fulfil all existing pre-orders due to launch before March 15 2014, but will only take new orders until the end of February.
