Huawei is going to launch its next flagship smartphone on September 2, at least according to a new report.

The company has posted a teaser image that, when translated, cites the date along with a message saying it wants to “bring you a taste of the flagship flagship”.

We’re not quite sure what that means, but a PhoneArena report claims sources have pointed to a Huawei Mate 8 launch.

It’s worth noting that there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the prospect of a Mate 8 launch, because it could give us valuable clues about Google’s next Nexus smartphone.

Google has reportedly turned to Huawei to produce a 6-inch handset for its Nexus program.

If that’s true, it’s likely the Mate 8 will bear plenty of similarities to a Huawei Nexus device for 2015.

We’ll just have to wait until September 2 to find out the truth – that’s squarely in IFA Berlin tradeshow territory.

The Mate 8 is the rumoured successor to last September’s Huawei Mate 7, which landed as a formidable 6-inch phablet.

The Huawei Mate 8 is expected to be similarly equipped with a 6-inch display, albeit with a 1,440 x 2,560 resolution this time around. That’s up from the Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixel panel on its predecessor.

It’s also tipped to be the first smartphone to use Huawei’s custom-built flagship Kirin 950 mobile chip, as well as 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage.

Bringing up the camera front is a rear-facing 20.7-megapixel snapper, while an 8-megapixel shooter is tipped to handle selfies.

All that will reportedly be powered by a sizeable 4,100mAh battery – that’s probably a good thing considering the enormous display mooted to appear.
