Research in Motion has launched BlackBerry Messenger Version 7, the latest update for its popular mobile social network.
Introducing new voice capabilities, the key new feature of BBM 7 is the ability to make free voice calls to any of your BlackBerry Messenger contacts over a Wi-Fi connection. Known as BBM Voice, users can easily switch between texting and talking within a conversation.
The new split-screen feature also means BlackBerry Messenger users can check texts from other conversations, read emails or use other apps whilst talking to a contact with BBM Voice.
On top of this, BlackBerry Messenger will also let you know when your contacts are available for a voice call, as well as providing a new selection of emoticons to express yourself with in text chats.
“BBM began as a convenient and effective business messaging tool, and today it is an essential part of daily communications for customers around the world,” T.A McCann, Vice President of BBM and Social Communities at Research in Motion, said. “Now, with BBM version 7, customers have a new option: they can text and talk with their BBM contacts near and far, for free. With the integrated experience, we extend the core features of reliable, real-time engagement to include voice calling and take BBM to the next level.”
The update will also link your BlackBerry Messenger profile, groups and contacts with your BBID for easy backup and restore capabilities, and will allow instant transfer to BlackBerry 10.
Users will also now be notified when there is a BlackBerry Messenger update available, and allow them to download and update from directly within the app.
BlackBerry Messenger Version 7 with BBM Voice is available now for all BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry 6 OS or higher free on BlackBerry App World.
