Report: Samsung making chips for AMD

Samsung could provide a boost to struggling chip maker AMD according to a report.

AMD may have enlisted Samsung as a supplier for its 2016 chips, as reported by South Korea’s Electronic Times.

The company’s new Zen processors are expected late next year, and both Samsung and Globalfoundries could be involved in manfucaturing the CPUs and GPUs using a 14 nanometer process.

In recent years, AMD has struggled to compete with rivals Intel and Nvidia in CPU and GPU sales and is laying off five percent of its workforce.

The Zen processors are the company’s chance to reassert itself as a leading chip maker.

The 14-nanometer process means that the forthcoming chips could be as much as 40 percent faster than the current range.

Samsung has also struggled recently with declining smartphone and tablet sales, and has been looking to boost its chip making business.

It already supplies chips to Apple and GPUs to Nvidia and is working on even more advanced 10 nanometer chips which are expected to debut next year.

With both AMD and Samsung facing tough competition, a partnership makes sense, although neither company has commmented at this point.
