Report: Jack Dorsey to become permanent Twitter CEO

Twitter co-founder and current interim CEO Jack Dorsey will reportedly be confirmed as the permanent replacement for former chief executive Dick Costolo.

Re/code sources say the announcement is imminent and comes more than 100 days after Costolo stood down from the role.

Twitter hasn’t commented on the reports, but confirmation could be as soon as Thursday, the report claims.

Dorsey, who also runs the Square payments start-up, will continue to oversee both companies according to the report.

He founded Twitter in 2006 with Evan Williams, and returns to the big seat at a troubling time for the micro-blog.

Twitter has been spinning its wheels for years, in terms of user growth, and continues to struggle to attract newcomers to the platform.

The social network has been surpassed by the likes of Instagram and WhatsApp, while Snapchat is believed to be closing in on Twitter’s stagnant active user base of 316 million.

While Facebook continues to experience seemingly limitless growth, Twitter has been exploring ways to engage new users and is even thought to be pondering dropping the 140-character tweet limit.

Reportedly, it’s a move Dorsey has been in favour of, and will likely become a reality if he gets the job full-time.

Can the co-founder help Twitter rediscover some of the old magic? How would you react to the death of the 140-character limit? Share your thoughts below.
