Report: iPhone 8 could play host to a 3D camera

And here we are, suggestion 4,372 to have spewed forth from the iPhone 8 rumour mill, and this one’s a little bit left field.

According to new claims out of Korea, Apple is getting ready to partner with LG to fit the eagerly awaited iPhone 8 with a 3D camera.

Yes, you read that right, a 3D camera. Y’know, that thing a few manufacturers dabbled with about four years ago before realising that the were a) crap and b) a total gimmick that no one really wanted.

Citing unnamed ‘sources close to the situation’, however, the Korea Economic Daily, has claimed that 3D snappers are about to make a very high profile return on Apple’s tenth anniversary handset.

This wouldn’t just be the same novelty 3D camera we have seen on early smartphone efforts though, oh no.

Instead, it’s been suggested that the addition would allow future iPhone owners to recognise physical objects in the real world and use augmented reality for a number of fun, futuristic apps. Basically Pokemon GO is about to look real old, real quick.

According to the reports: “Since LG Innotek also has its own 3D camera and related technologies, such joint efforts will likely to bear fruit sometime within next year.”

Give Apple has yet to offer any formal word on the claims, however, and given the mass of iPhone 8 rumours circulating, we’d take these reports with a pinch of salt for now.

Widely expected to drop in September 2017, the iPhone 8 has been reported to pack everything from an innovative curved, all-glass design, to improved camera, sharper screen and more powerful processor tech.
