Report: iPhone 5 Will Have 4in Screen

We’ve been hearing a lot or rumours regarding the imminent launch of the iPad 3 but until now we’ve heard little about the next generation iPhone 5.

While we initially expected the iPhone 5 to launch last year (when it turned out to be the iPhone 4S) it is a guarantee that it will arrive at some stage this year. And now an employee at Foxconn, the company which assembles the phones, has given some interesting details about the new handset.

Speaking to 9to5 Mac, the trusted source said that the phone, which is currently being called the iPhone 5, is now gearing up for production. The source said a number of sample devices (all slightly different from each other) are floating around the factory at the moment.

All the sample devices have a larger screen of 4in or above, one of which has been made by LG, and all samples have the recognisable symmetrical design of the current iPhone – seeming to rule out the teardrop-shaped devices which had also been rumoured.

The fact that the factory is now gearing up for production would seem to hint at a launch of the iPhone 5 in June as had been the case up until last year, when the launch was delayed until October.

9to5 Mac seem to think this source is reliable, saying it is the same source who first told them Apple was not bringing out the iPhone 5 last year and was building an iPhone 4S instead.

So it seems as if Apple is not straying away from the design of the iPhone 4/4S too much but is following the trend of other smartphone manufacturers by boosting that 3.5in screen.

Tim Cook declined to comment on the possibility of changing the screen size of the next iPhone during this week’s conference call about Apple’s record breaking quarter when it posted profits of over $13 billion for the last three months.
