Report: Android Silver initiative in ‘serious doubt’

Google’s rumoured plans to launch a premium Android Silver platform have reportedly been placed “on hold” amid internal doubts over its merits.

The initiative, which speculation suggests will serve up a premium experience via top-of-the-range ‘pure Android’ devices and high-level customer support, was reportedly set to arrive later this year.

However, The Information website’s sources now claim Google has postponed any imminent launch while it evaluates whether the scheme would be a hit with consumers.

According to the site, some Google employees have expressed “serious doubts” over the scheme’s prospects of success.

The report claims the departure of Google executive Nikesh Arora has played a key role in the change of tact. According to The Information, his relationship with mobile carriers, retailers and mobile manufacturers were one of the driving forces behind the initiative. The report intimates those outside parties were not so enthused by the Android Silver proposition, so Arora’s departure has led to a rethink.

Android Silver could have given Google the opportunity to cut into Apple’s lead in the prestige stakes, given many consumers feel the iPhone and iPad have the lead in that department.

If Android Silver doesn’t come to fruition (and Google has never officially acknowledged plans to introduce it) it’s likely that Google will continue pressing ahead with the Nexus programme, while offering Google Play Editions of the most popular handsets.
