Jobs' makes swift U-turn after fanboys attack.
Technology can be cruel. Top of the line one month can be virtually obsolete the next and prices never stop falling. That said, early iPhone customers were really dealt a hefty patella to the groin on Wednesday when Steve Jobs announced that just two months after launch Apple was cutting $200 from its flagship 8GB iPhone’s $599 RRP.
After (in somecases) days of queuing it seemed as if fanboys would be rewarded for their blind loyalty with a $200 two month anniversary idiot tax. Clearly something had to be done.
In a formal letter on the company’s site late last night Jobsy addressed ‘all iPhone customers’ and offered an olive branch:
“We need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these. Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. “
Further info about the rebate will be revealed next week as the “details are still being worked out” (obviously not a spur of the moment thing then…).
The move is a (s)complete 360(/s) welcome turnaround by Jobs who previously and perhaps cold heartedly told USA Today when quizzed on the subject of rebates: “That’s technology. If they bought it this morning, they should go back to where they bought it and talk to them. If they bought it a month ago, well, that’s what happens in technology”.
Best not alienate all your (s)fanboys(/s) hardcore customer base in one fell swoop eh Steve?
