Real Racing 3 gets major update

The new Real Racing 3 update may present itself under a Prestige Cars banner, but actually brings major upgrades to the popular racing SIM.

Available on Android and iOS devices, Real Racing 3 has been heavily praised despite initial progression mechanic and freemium issues, and has now been given a major update.

The free Version 1.2.0 update from developer Firemonkeys is listed as the Prestige Cars Update, bringing with it new high-end vehicles from Bentley and Mercedes-Benz.

“The Prestige Cars Update is here! Bentley and Mercedes-Benz join Real Racing 3’s extensive stable of manufacturers, while the highly requested Time Trial mode arrives with global leaderboards and ghost racing!” reads the update summary on the App Store.

However, within this seemingly vehicle-related update, comes a whole host of new features including a user interface redesign.

“We have reconfigured the career structure to give people clearer progression through the game,” explains Real Racing 3 Producer Kynan Woodman.

It is now easier to judge where lap time improvements can be made on races throughout a player’s career. Time Trials have been included as well in this latest update.

“We have now introduced Time Trials, one of the most wanted features from our community. You can now compete with your friends on global leaderboards racing cars from top manufacturers such as Bentley and Mercedes-Benz.”

Servicing has also been tweaked to reward players for a clean drive in a race and those individual bars for tyre or suspension repair for example have been replaced with a combination repair bar that will repair the entire car.

We expect that although this may mean less frequent repairs in the short term, players could be waiting several hours when the full repair is eventually required.

Firemonkeys has also introduced a repeat play bonus too, giving players rewards for any consecutive play days.

The free update is available now on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Amazon App Store for Android.

The update was upsetting:
- Several bugs have been introduced.
- They have removed the repair model for different car systems and combined them into one. So know you dont get feedback telling you that, for example, driving on gravel resulted in this type of damage and to this extent. That info was pretty useful. All gone!
- The race event menu now takes much longer to navigate. I see no reason for their change. No improvement is evident.
- The purse for winning races has now decreased! Thats right. Before the update, I used to race the last Melbourne race in the Ford GT FIA on the GT1 Grand Tour to gain some fast cash. I got about 15,000 for a win. After the update I get only like 6,000 for a win. What is this crap?! In-game purchases for RR3 cost a lot EA! Perhaps you, gamer, have spent some hefty real money on buying cars and selectively developing them on races that would give you the best payback. And now EA has changed the payback!

There is great racing in RR3. But EA's business model for the gamer has gone from bad to worse in this update.

Game Over

The game is now severely restricting your purchases, in each series you must buy a low-end car first and upgrade it for big money, only to notice that even with all upgrades it cannot participate in the last races of the series due to Performance Rating restrictions. Combined with the extreme car & upgrade prices in higher series this means you will need to sink hundreds of real dollars to complete the game. Cheaper to buy a console and Gran Turismo/Forza...

Hi folks, the new update has major problems with changed policies and significant frame rate stuttering. Just see the Real Racing 3 Facebook page and the Firemonkey forum for details. I updated, closed all apps, restarted my iPad Mini, uninstalled the app, and re-installed it and it was still problematic. FORTUNATELY, I had not updated the app on my laptop so I was able to re-intall the pre-updated version. DON'T UPGRADE until you read on the forums that EA has addressed these significant issues.
