Gadget stress tester JerryRigEverything has turned his attention to the Razer Phone, and the results of his prodding and scratching show the handset isn’t the toughest phone on the block.
Given the Razer Phone is based on the Nextbit Robin handset, thanks to Razer buying Nextbit, JerryRigEverything expected it to share some of the durability attributes of the short-lived phone.
But it turned out to be a little tougher, surviving most of the brutal bend test without any major damage except for some superficial cracks. The Nextbit Robin was ruined by the same test.
And despite the use of Gorilla Glass 3 rather than Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass 5, the Razer Phone’s impressive 120Hz refresh rate screen withstood scratching from JerryRigEverything’s test until “level 6” – the levels run two to nice – so six holds its own against other top tier phones.
With metal back and sides with a black coating, it’s no surprise that the Razer Phone can be fairly easily scratched if you take a sharp blade to it. Of course, that’s not something most sane people do, but the testing does show that if you drop the phone onto a hard surface it will likely get some noticeable scuffs.
The dual camera lenses, despite their glass covering, and the fingerprint scanner also struggled to withstand scratching. But they both continued to work after JerryRigEverything when at them, though the scratching would suggest that putting the Razer Phone in a case would be sensible.
Finally, the Razer Phone survived the “burn test” which exposed the handset’s screen to a cigarette lighter flame. The LCD display held up well against the test, while other phones with AMOLED displays tend to suffer a permanent mark.
