Raspberry Pi shrinks size and price with Model A+
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has just unveiled a new version of its universally praised microcomputer.
The Model A+ is a slimmer, cheaper version of the Model A board, and is kicking off with a cheapo price-tag of £20.
“When we announced the Model B+ back in July, we said that we’d also be producing a lower-cost variant, analogous to the original Model A,” said Eben Upton, Rasbperry Pi Foundation’s CEO and founder.
“Since then, James has been beavering away, and today we’re pleased to announce the release of the Raspberry Pi Model A+.”
The introduction of the new kit means the old Model A is being discontinued indefinitely.
The Model A+ measures 2.6-inches long, while its predecessor was a tad more cumbersome at 3.4-inches long.
It’s also had a bit of a performance upgrade, with the Raspberry Pi Foundation promising its latest wares will draw less power. There’s also an improved audio circuit, with a dedicated low-noise power supply.
A push-push MicroSD slot also features, replacing the standard friction fit SD card port borne by its forebears, as well a bonus 14 GPIO pins, bringing the total up to 40.
The Model A+ is built right here in the UK, specifically at a Sony factory over in South Wales – the same location where the Model B+ is built.
