Ubisoft has admitted Rainbow 6: Patriots had to be restarted, explaining sudden silence on the project.
Rainbow 6: Patriots was originally announced in 2011, but the game suddenly went dark with no explanation.
Ubisoft’s North American President, Laurent Detoc, has now admitted that the entire game had to be restarted.
“We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again,” explained Detoc. “There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough.”
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6: Patriots was announced as a majority single-player game that focused on showing some of the realities of modern terrorism. Ubisoft explained that the game would allow you to experience events from multiple character perspectives.
“Rainbow had to be remade. Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out.
Detoc even hinted that the upcoming Xbox One and PS4 title could arrive under a different name altogether.
“Could it become a shooter with another name at the end, because the team doesn’t want to do the counter-terrorist guys? Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That’s possible.”
At Gamescom, Ubisoft said work is still underway on Rainbow 6: Patriots, but the team wanted to make sure the game was “perfect” before release.
“On Rainbow 6, it’s still cooking,” said Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre in August. “It’s an important franchise for Ubisoft. We want to make sure, on this one, like all the other games we’re working on, that we bring it when we feel it’s perfect.”
