Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino accuses Disney of 'extortion'

It might seem like the entire planet is enamoured with Star Wars, but one director’s not so smitten.

Quentin Tarantino has said that Disney is trying “to fuck” him with the new Star Wars movie.

The legendary director says that Disney is engaging in “extortion”, damaging the debut of his new movie The Hateful Eight.

Speaking during an interview on the ‘Howard Stern Show’ yesterday, Tarantino claimed Disney ruined the planned opening of the movie, as reported by Movie Pilot.

“We were gonna play at the Cinerama Dome on the 25th,” explains the director. “We were gonna open there and play exclusively for two weeks. And Star Wars was gonna play the two weeks before us.”

“So the thing about it was, Disney, who owns Star Wars, decided, ‘Well, you know what? Maybe we wanna play throughout the entire holiday season. So we’re gonna go to the Cinerama Dome and say that they can’t honour their contract with us to show the Hateful Eight.”

Tarantino clarifies that ArcLight – LA’s cinema scheduler – attemped to resist Disney’s alleged pressure due to the Hateful Eight contract.

However, the director claims Disney “threatened” the theatre with an ultimatum.

“No, you are going to play Star Wars in the Cinerama Dome for the entire holiday season,” he describes Disney as saying, “and if you don’t, if you honour your deal with The Hateful Eight, we will not allow you to have Star Wars, the biggest movie in the world, we will not allow you to show it at any of your Arclight movie theatres.”

“They’ve got the biggest movie in the world,” Tarantino continues. “We’re talking about one effing theatre…they are going out of their way to fuck me!

The director adds: “It’s vindictive, it’s mean, and it’s extortion.”

The Hateful Eight is Tarantino’s latest flick, and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

The movie is set in Wyoming in the years after the Civil War, telling the tale of eight strangers cooped up in a stagecoach stopover during a blizzard.

The film was embroiled in controversy from the off: Tarantino decided to cancel the movie after the script was leaked in early 2014.

However, the director eventually changed his mind, and the Hateful Eight release date is now set for December 25.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, meanwhile, had its nationwide debut in the UK today.

Isn't it also illegal to use such tactics (as Disney in this case)?

The illegality of what Disney is doing is only as harmful to Disney as the affordability of the fine they may pay should they be found to be in breach of a law.. Disney don't feel fines..
