New Qualcomm chips point to the future of smartphones

Qualcomm has unveiled the chipsets that will be powering your 2015 smartphone, as the Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810 processors are confirmed.

Pointing to big improvements on the smartphone front, the two new chipsets, which should start appearing in phones from early next year, will support everything from UHD 4K displays, Cat 6 LTE connections and 55-megapixel cameras.

Despite the previously confirmed Snapdragon 805 CPU not expected to feature in consumer-available handsets until later this summer, the 808 and 810 are likely to power their first smartphones and tablets around MWC 2015.

"These product announcements, in combination with the continued development of our next-generation custom 64-bit CPU, will ensure we have a tremendous foundation on which to innovate as we continue to push the boundaries of mobile computing performance in the years to come," Murthy Renduchintala, Executive Vice President at Qualcomm Technologies said.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Features
Tipped to be “Qualcomm Technologies’ highest performing Snapdragon platform to date,” the 64-bit 810 chip will allow smartphones to boast a rich, native 4K UHD interface and video playback, hinting that the first 4K display hosting smartphones will launch within the next 12 months.

Further features introduced by the premium Snapdragon CPU include the ability to record 1080p, Full HD video at 120 frames-per-second, and support for image sensors up to 55-megapixel.

Incorporating an Adreno 430 GPU that is 30 per cent faster than its predecessor, the 810 will add improved Bluetooth 4.1, USB 3.0, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity options.

On top of this, high speed LPDDR4 memory will be introduced to smartphones and tablets thanks to the Snapdragon 810, as will the ability to connect to external 4K displays via HDMI 1.4.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 Features
A slightly more stripped back offering, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 is a six-core chipset designed to work with WQXGA displays with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution.

With an Adreno 418 GPU chip improving graphics performance by a reported 20 per cent, the 808 adds LPDDR3 memory, boosted Wi-Fi options and a raft of battery management improvements.
