Your next smartphone could support 600Mbps download speeds

Qualcomm has announced new details regarding its upcoming Snapdragon 820 mobile chipset.

The US chipmaker confirmed that the top-end chipset will feature Qualcomm’s newly upgraded X12 LTE modem.

As such, it means any smartphone using the Snapdragon 820 will support CAT12 LTE-Advanced download speeds.

That means the Snapdragon 820 can offer theoretical download speeds of up to 600Mbps.

However, it should be noted that such speeds also rely on the network offered by your cellular provider.

The Snapdragon 820 will also support CAT13 upload speeds, providing a theoretical uplink ceiling of 150Mbps.

The chipset is also super future-proofed, supporting unlicensed LTE and featuring 2 x 2 MU-MIMO (802.11ac) and multi-gigabit 802.11ad Wi-Fi.

“The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with X12 LTE modem is a new industry leader, offering highly differentiated features that put OEMs and carriers on the cutting-edge, including the latest advances in LTE and Wi-Fi connectivity,” explains Alex Katouzian, senior vice president of product management at Qualcomm.

Katouzian continues: “With technologies such as 4K video, virtual reality and cognitive computing rapidly evolving, it’s important to provide consumers with the speed and bandwidth to create a more compelling mobile experience.”

We also recently reported on the addition of Quick Charge 3.0 to the Snapdragon 820, which means your phone will be able to go from zero battery to an 80% charge in just 35 minutes. Not bad.

Right, so when can you get your hands on the new chipset? The first devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 on board are expected to be available in the first half of 2016.
