Qualcomm bringing wireless charging and 4G to Mercedes cars

Qualcomm and Daimler have announced a partnership that will see wireless charging and 4G connectivity installed in Mercedes-Benz cars.

The two companies used this weekend gone’s glitzy Monaco grand prix to announce an exciting team-up that will bring Qualcomm’s communication technology to Daimler’s Mercedes cars.

It probably wasn’t the best time for the Mercedes F1 team to get their own in-car communication all wrong, condemning a dominant Lewis Hamilton to third place, but that’s sport for you.

In the short term, new Mercedes car owners will be able to juice up their phones in-car without having to fiddle around with plugs thanks to Qualcomm WiPower technology. Beyond that, Qualcomm’s Halo Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) technology will be put to use in electrically powered Mercedes cars, allowing owners to charge up the cars themselves without wires.

In addition, Qualcomm will be bringing 4G connectivity to the future Mercedes-Benz range.

“The automobile has become a mobile platform and an extension of always-on connectivity, and as such, we’re utilizing our expertise as the leader in mobile technology to deliver in-car experiences comparable to the ease and convenience of smartphones,” said Qualcomm president Derek Aberle.

Besides these direct implementations, the two companies have also revealed that they are “jointly assessing the application of Qualcomm Technology’s newly developed Automotive Solutions,” which could see Qualcomm’s in-car infotainment initiative being rolled out to Mercedes cars at some point in the future.
