We have managed to get our hands on the upcoming PS4, months ahead of its formal release and, to make sure you know what to expect, we have compared it with its predecessor, the Sony PS3.

The gaming industry has moved on dramatically in the seven years since the PS3 was originally released and the PS4 is testament to this on all fronts. From the radically overhauled spec to the reduced launch price and more streamlined design, the PS4 is a whole new beast.

Update: PS4 Release Date Confirmed: Console to hit UK November 29

Lining up the new PS4 alongside all three iterations of the outgoing PS3, the PS4 vs PS3 video below shows how Sony's upcoming Xbox One rival differs from its predecessor, both inside and out.

Considerably smaller than the PS3 launch model, the upcoming PS4 features a two-tone design with a single gloss panel sat atop a matt black base. A slightly boxy console, the new PlayStation, unlike the rounded PS3 before it, sees it upper half recessed slightly from the bottom portion, giving it the look of a slightly squashed or stretched square.

Roughly similar in size to the PS3 Slim, the PS4 is larger than the latest PS3 iteration, the PS3 Super Slim and will hit retailers on a currently undisclosed date later this year. The PS4 price has been set at £349 in the UK, £80 cheaper than the Xbox One.

On the inside things have been ramped up dramatically too. An eight-core CPU makes the cut built around custom X86 PC architecture. Alongside this, a 1.84 TFLOPS graphics processer and 8GB of zippy GDDR5 RAM features.

With a new console comes a new controller, and the PS4's DualShock 4 peripheral is arguably one of the console's biggest advancements, adding a new touchpanel interface, handy 'Share' button and redesigned size and shape.

Having had the chance to take a sneak peek at the upcoming PS4, we can’t wait to spend more time with the console and bring you our full PS4 review in the near future.

When will you get an Xbox One to do the same?

Why is the PS4 longer than it is wide? Doesn't look like it'll fit nicely on my shelf.

I'm sorry to hear that, should I have Sony fix that for you?

No. Sony has slyly made it appear smaller than it is. Why should a piece of electronics that's supposed to fit on shelves, stands, etc. be longer than it is wide? Very dumb move by Sony.

No. Sony are masters at design. The PS4 is a brilliant design both inside and out. Dualshock 4 is the best controller ever made. Where's the 'sly'. It is very small. Fact. If it's too big, your shelf is too small. The XB1 is what you call HUGE. Even bigger than launch PS3. You will need a monster shelf for that monster joke box so think yourself lucky your not an MS fanboy. Or maybe you are. If you are I pity you because you are going to have to buy the thing.

As for the PS4, the console is perfect. Everything I wished for. Sony have done a really good job on this one. It's dumb to suggest otherwise when you compare it to the competition.

Xbox One is big fat and clunky. Won't fit on your shelf at all.

Juster, do you work for Sony? It appears to be a good console, but no backward compatibility? Sony goofed up there. Instead, they try to force the "social" crap on you. I personally don't want to play a game with someone from "far away lands". I guess I'm more the solitary type.....

Yeah I'm curious to see a video of the bone and how it compares to PS4. Sony did its job PS4 looks slick. Now to see what MS has done.
