PS4 Video: Ubisoft discusses Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag for next-gen

Sony has released an Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag PS4 video that sees Ubisoft developers discussing the benefits of working with the PS4 console.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was officially announced in March with a November 1 release date, but although a PS4 release was confirmed, we have heard little about how the game will run.

“The first thing that is going to change drastically is the graphics because we think that visually with the stronger GPUs, stronger CPU, a lot of RAM, we’re going to be able to exploit this console a lot and push the bar visually,” said Sylvain Trottier, Associate Producer at Ubisoft. “The [current generation of] console is running at 100 per cent. You cannot add all these little details that are going to make the game even more beautiful, even more immersive.”

The PS4 has been built with the developers at the forefront of the design, according to an interview with Sony’s lead system architect Mark Cerny, and Ubisoft for one has realised the next-gen console’s potential.

“The beauty of working with Sony honestly on this console, for this generation, was the fact it was built for the game developers,” said Trottier. “To be really honest, Sony fixed all the issues that could have been there on the console and right now I think it’s up to us. We have a perfect tool in our hand, it’s up to us to push the bar and make it shine.”

The new PS4 DualShock 4 controller introduces a new level of gameplay for developers to utilise, by blending multiplayer and single player experiences.

“I think definitely the share button is something really really cool because now it will allow us to keep the single player experience but make it connected,” said Jean Guesdon, Creative Director for Assassin’s Creed 4 at Ubisoft.

Strongly focusing on the successful open sea warfare of Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will tell the tale of pirate Edward Kenway and blend the nautical adventure with on-shore city and wilderness locations.

“Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will merge ground gameplay and naval gameplay, so you will able – totally seamlessly, without any loading – to go from your ship to ground, from ground to ship and from ship to ship,” said Guesdon. “You will be able to start the mission on ground, continue it directly at sea and maybe finish it on another island. This type of experience, of missions, is totally new in the brand.”
