PS4 universal remote coming this month

PS4 remote

Sony has announced that the long-await official Universal Media Remote for PS4 is coming later in October.

Despite being on the market for around two years, Sony's PS4 console still doesn't have an official media remote control. That's all set to change this month - sort of.

Following an Amazon-based leak back in July, Sony has announced on its US blog that the Universal Media Remote for PS4 is set for release in late October.

It's not actually a full Sony-made product, but the PS4 maker has worked closely with peripheral specialist Performance Designed Products (PDP) to produce this officially endorsed remote. This means that it faithfully maps all of the DualShock 4's buttons onto its surface.

According to Sony, the Universal Media Remote will let you "turn on the system, navigate the UI, and control video content on apps like Netflix or on Blu-rays and DVDs" - so everything the official PS3 media remote permitted you to do from that console's launch, basically.

The Bluetooth-driven remote can also be used to control up to three other devices, such as a TV, cable box, or stereo.

There's a bit of a snag, though. The Universal Media Remote for PS4 is only launching in three countries at this time: the US, Canada and Mexico. Boo.

If you do find yourself somewhere around the North American continent around the end of October (the aforementioned Amazon leak specified October 31), you'll be able to grab a Universal Media Remote for $29.99, which works out to just under £20.
