PS4 UI shown off at Gamescom

Sony has shown off the PS4 UI at Gamescom 2013, giving gamers a brief glimpse of how its next-generation console will function.

Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, has demoed the new, completely redesigned PS4 user interface during the Sony press conference at Gamescom 2013.

The brief demonstration by Yoshida reveals how PS4 owners will be able to access their games library, the PSN, and other PS4 features.

Gone is the PS3’s cross media bar (XMB) focus, with Sony instead introducing something a little more square and blocked for the PS4 predecessor. The XMB is still there though, hovering above the new UI, but only offers access to trophies, friend lists, chat parties, settings and notifications.

It certainly looks a little more slick than the PS3 interface, especially as it has larger pictures and more animated content for the PS4 UI.

Yoshida even shows off how easy it is to pick up where gamers left off in a game. The new save state feature allows the PS4 to quickly load a game and continue playing without pause.

We expect that Sony will be showing off the new PS4 UI in a more complete fashion closer to the PS4 release date on November 29 in the UK and November 15 in the US.

Sony at Gamescom
On top of the PS4 release date, Sony also revealed that it is partnering with broadband providers to offer PS4 gaming packages.

Sony announced that Virgin Media among other broadband providers, will offer gamers exclusive broadband packages that could offer download speeds around the 200Mbps mark, perfect for online multiplayer.

It will also be introducing hefty price cuts for the PS Vita handheld console, despite its increased focus on the Remote Play for PS4. There will also be “significant reductions to the PS Vita memory cards”, which are currently very expensive.
