PS4 Problems: Consoles suffer from bricking issues

Luke Johnson by

The first PS4 pre-orders have started hitting gamers’ doorsteps in the US, and the PS4 problems have already started with reports of bricking consoles.

With the PS4 release date set for tomorrow, November 15, in the US, some lucky gamers have already received their pre-ordered consoles. It’s not all good news, however, with a number of early adopters already reporting a range of PS4 problems.

“After playing a brief game of NBA 2k14 I quit and inserted my battlefield 4 disk. The system prompted for an update, so while watching the progress bar (Around 20%) my controller light turned from blue to white. Hasn't worked since,” NEOGaf user Dylx has reported.

He added: “Went thru a number of "fixes" with customer service and none of them worked. They are shipping me a box to get the unit serviced. Safe Mode on the console no longer works.”

Far from the only early PS4 adopter to report PS4 problems, members of the games press have also experienced issues with their Xbox One rivals.

"The first retail PS4 we got from Sony didn't work,” Stephen Totilo, Editor of Kotaku stated discussing his issues with the emerging PS4 problems.

“The first retail unit that Sony provided me failed to work when I plugged it into a TV in Kotaku's office,” he said. “A colleague and I were able to compare it to a second PS4 that did work and we found that the issue was rather simple: the bad unit had a faulty HDMI jack that we couldn't fully plug an HDMI cable into.

"It couldn't make a solid connection and therefore, apparently, couldn't transmit a stable signal to our TV. We tried different cables and monitors. The issue was with the console.”

Far from an all-encompassing issue, most PS4 consoles appear to be fine with Totilo adding: “The other four units we've tested first-hand have worked fine."

Sony has yet to acknowledge any PS4 problems or offer an official solutions to how the issues may be fixed.

its funny how most other news outlets forget to post this in their articles,

“The other four units we've tested first-hand have worked fine."

Thanks you! It makes me feel a little bit better about the situation. Not good, but better.

It was recently that someone warned people about this problem on this forum. People down-rated his comment. Now they should understand how wise that statement was. Any product will have manufacturing and software problems in the first 6 months, and this is especially true for first generation and products that are rushed to the market.

Wise-up people. We can show corporations that rushing unfinished products lacking in quality control is unacceptable. Speak with your money!

I would wait and see Xbox launch before trying to deflate the situation with Sony by using supposed Xbox issues. We know have specific complaints from professionals about the retail PS4. Where are those source for the Xbox retail version?

All electronics have 5-10% failure rate.. I bought. 3000 dollar Panasonic 60tv and had to replace it twice because of bad panels. If it isn't as bad as the red ring of death 50% or so failure rrate thats normal. I had an Xbox fail 3 times but they fixed them all, I'm sure of ky ps4 or Xbox fails the same will happen.I also had an iPhone fail 2 times but you never see these other companies in the news for failure rates.

Hooked up the PS4 and zero issues, I'm losing faith in the American biased press. Yes I'm sure there were consoles that had issues but I've seen way to many headlines that imply this is very wide spread even before the launch. Truth is not important to you only that you get a hit, that someone clicked to read you're article so the boss is happy. Trusted Review? I don't trust you at all.

Of course some of the consoles were going to be defective at launch. I'm quite surprised that Sony has acknowledged this and revealed that it is just a small handful of people experiencing problems. However, I don't expect my one to be perfect when I first plug it in...but I hope it is :/ haha

Mine has been flawless other than a couple error messages when playing Battlefield 4. I lost my progress in the level but otherwise restarted and it took a day to do it again. So far so good. I think the PS store is doing some maintenance also because sometimes it takes a bit to load it up, other times its instant

This would be just launch day hiccups if it wasn't part of a bigger problem. They haven't had clean firmware for the ps3 for over 3 years. So these problems their having now was no surprise to me at all. Its never wise to buy anything at launch. But just trying to use anything sony of late is not wise at all.

" Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues. The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents."

This is their standard response when it comes to anything that goes wrong on psn. We believe they are isolated incidents. Anybody who has fully used psn has heard this way too regularly. Meanwhile issues like this is in fact very common with psn. So for anyone to think that this psn release screw up is just another isolated incident. Is simply fooling themselves...

I am a big PS fan but I have to say that I am very disappointed in this PS4 console. Crashing problems with games and it is not what it was promoted to be. I see this as an over rated lightly enhanced PS3. I should have saved my money. Sony you may have lost a lifetime customer. Not that you would care. If I were anyone looking to buy a PS4, I would not encourage it. Right now, I would tell you that you are crazy. I really can not vent here the way that I truly feel about this console….so I will let you read between the lines.

This article is very misleading and there have been very few reports of this, i know lots of people that have a ps4 including my self and NO issues, hardware or software wise

November 21, 2013, 7:34 am

Of course a lot of them work. It seems that the fail rate is higher than it should be though.

yeah right xbox one is having hardware issues with the disk drive problems

November 25, 2013, 7:43 pm

Better than a bricked console, plus the disk drive issue doesn't stop you from playing games. Since you have to install all of your games, might as well just download them.

Why is it misleading, they didn't say it happened to all of them.

We bought the ps4 for our 3 boys...unfortunately the 30 ps3 games we have are basically trash now, oh and the ps4 won't play some blu rays, like fast 6..and yesterday one of the controllers light turned white and now it won't do anything..so I hope these issues get fixed cuz i'm already disappointed..
