PS4 Pro enhancements for existing PS4 games could come at a cost

Earlier this week Sony announced game developers will be able to retrofit existing games with enhanced visuals to make the most of the new PS4 Pro.

While, these patches could add new lease of life to flagging PlayStation 4 titles, they could also do damage to gamers’ wallets.

According to Sony executive Masayasu Ito, publishers pushing out these ‘forward compatibility’ updates may choose to charge gamers wishing to enhance their libraries.

In an interview with Game Impress Watch (translated by Kotaku) Ito said: “It will be different for each title. I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee.”

Ito also said this was likely to vary for first-party titles, but Sony has since clarified it “will not charge consumers for patches.”

Forget 4K Blu-ray, PS4 Pro is hugely impressive

Sony’s in-house developers have every incentive to upgrade games in order to push the merits of the PS4 Pro.

On Wednesday, Mark Carney said more than a dozen first-party games are currently being prepped to support the new console.

However, third-party developers like Naughty Dog might want some return on all that extra work in boosting The Last of Us: Remastered for example. (Note: Will that now be called ‘The Last of Us: Remastered: Remastered’ now?)

Other current games that’ll benefit from updates are Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3, Shadow of Mordor, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
