Sony has confirmed that the PS4 PlayStation App for Android and iOS devices will be released on November 22, the same day as the Xbox One.

Launching a week before the PS4 itself, the PlayStation App will be available to download from November 22 in preparation for the console’s arrival.

The PlayStation App will also be coming to the PS Vita in an incoming software update.

One of the PlayStation App’s main features is to turn your iOS or Android device into a second screen for the PS4.

“PlayStation App can be downloaded onto various mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android based smartphones and tablets, from the App Store and Google Play,” reads the official Sony statements. “Once installed, these devices can be used as second screens in supported PlayStation 3 titles, and users can easily access PSN features such as Friend Lists and Trophies.”

For selected title, the PlayStation App will enable new in-game features when accessed via a mobile device.

“For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.”

When your friends upload gameplay videos or start live streaming content, the app will launch a browser to allow you to watch the clips. You can also post comments, or screenshots, footage and live streams of your own.

You’ll also be able to access your PS4 profile, exchange messages between PS4, PS3, PS Vita and mobile platforms, and read all your friends’ activities on What’s New.

The official app will notify your of any new alert or game invites as well as allowing you to browse through the PlayStation website for news, blog posts or game info.

Purchases can be made from the PlayStation Store for game content using the app, and these will automatically be downloaded on the PS4.

An iOS or Android device can also be used a rudimentary remote control for the PS4 using the PlayStation App as long as both devices have access to the same Wi-Fi network. Using your smartphone or tablet you’ll be able to switch the PS4 to and from standby mode and use the device as a PS4 keyboard.
