PS4 Neo created because Playstation VR was “truly awful” on launch models

The upcoming virtual reality headset was “going to be terrible” on launch PS4 consoles, according to an anonymous insider.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge Magazine (via IBTimesUK) a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) made the following comments regarding Playstation VR:

"PSVR was going to be terrible on a [launch] PS4. It was going to be truly awful. Something a bit more powerful starts to bring VR into range. If you want to deal with crazy requirements for performance in VR, you absolutely have to do this."

We’d take this new information with a grain of salt, as many Playstation VR titles have been seen running on PS4 launch hardware since its reveal at GDC 2014.

Playstation VR will come bundled with an external processing unit required to use the device when it launches in October 2016. The source could very well be referring to performance prior to the processor’s development.

Another source at the magazine, a lead designer at an unnamed European studio said, "there hasn't been a real outcry for more power, apart from developers making VR stuff – and those are weighted more heavily at the moment. VR is the most exciting development in the industry right now, and if it's here to stay then there will be a lot of demand for more powerful hardware."

PS4 Neo is rumoured to be in development at Sony, and will introduce significant hardware upgrades and 4K resolution support in a new, redesigned console. The new machine will also provide better support for upcoming Playstation VR titles, which are expected to be quite demanding.

Sony is expected to make some kind of announcement at E3 2016, so we'll be sure to update you once we know more.
