PS4 features to see Sony 4K movie downloads available

Sony has confirmed that the PS4 will offer 4K movie downloads, with the ultra-high-definition flicks to require hefty 100GB downloads.

Teasing additional PS4 features following the next-gen console’s recent unveiling, Sony has confirmed that the expectant Xbox 720 rival will allow avid gamers and film fans to store and view 4K content through the device, a feature that will continue to grow with the increasing availability of 4K content.

Unlikely to be a spur-of-the-moment purchase for users, the 4K films will come in roughly 100GB units meaning overnight or all-day downloads are likely to be needed. What’s more, with 4K TVs currently setting wannabe owners back upwards of £30k, it is not expected that 4K content will be a mass market service, at least at launch.

Making the confirmation a little over a week after the formal PS4 launch event, Sony has revealed that it is facing “challenges” in making the 4K content more readily available to users, with even the PS4’s background download capabilities little consolation when tackling a gargantuan 100GB file.

Speaking on the upcoming PS4 4K content inclusion, Sony Electronics President and Chief Operating Officer Phil Molyneux revealed that the 4K content (four times the resolution of 1080p Full HD) will provide strong consumer experiences if a viable means of access is available.

“I promise you will not be disappointed,”Molyneux said at a recent Sony event in New York where he admitted although an option, 4K downloads would be “100 gigabytes and plus.”

Remaining relatively tipped lipped on the PS4’s 4K capabilities, ones which are believed to see the console support 4K photos and videos but not games, Molyneux added that the incoming 4K download service features “challenges that we have to work through.” He added: “We’ve got some good ideas that will make that a comfortable consumer experience.

Formally unveiled by the Japanese manufacturer earlier this month, much speculation still surrounds the upcoming PS4, with even the consoles design yet to be officially showcased.

With the PS4 DualShock 4 controller set to play host to a new front-mounted touchpanel interface, similar to the one found on the PS Vita, Sony has revealed that the PS4 will boast 8GB of RAM and an AMD manufactured PC style chipset for improved online capabilities and for cheaper, high-specced processing power.

Would the promise of future 4K downloads tempt you into splashing out on a PS4 and compatible 4K TV or are you happy enough with good ol’ Full HD content? Let us know via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
