With Sony leaving many disappointed at the PS4 launch event be failing to show off how the console hardware will look, the company’s president has revealed that the PS4 design has yet to be finalised.
Suggesting that he has yet to see how the PS4 console will look, Hiroshi Kawano, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, has revealed that, despite the console being officially launched ahead of a 2013 holiday season PS4 release date, the company has yet to decide what form the final console will take.
“If I’m being honest, I also haven’t seen its final design,” Kawano told Japanese gaming outlet 4Gamer following Wednesday night’s formal PS4 launch event.
In reference to the new DualShock 4 PS4 controller which was unveiled alongside the next-gen console, Kawano added: “Even the controller we showed today, I saw the final design around yesterday or so.”
Reportedly codenamed ‘Jedai’ during production, the DualShock 4 controller was formally unveiled with a new touchpad interface, akin to that found on the PS Vita, adoring the peripheral’s fore whilst a new ‘Share’ button sits on the back allowing gamers to instantly upload 10-second in-game video clips.
“I’ve seen numerous prototypes from when it was still codenamed ‘Jedai’, and I heard that an on-board touch pad was in the final specs,” Kawano said, further highlighting how fine Sony is cutting its deadlines surround the console ahead of the PS4 release.
With a raft of PS4 rumours suggesting Sony will now showcase its PS4 hardware at E3 2013 in June, Kawano’s comments come after his US equivalent, Sony Computer of America head Jack Tretton confirmed that the “mass-production box” that will make up the consumer available PS4, is “still in development in terms of final specs and design.”
Whilst the PS4 looks set to push boundaries in terms of introducing new social gaming and portable accessibility options to its specs impressive next-gen console, the company’s failure to showcase the console’s hardware can caused many to already lose faith in the device.
According to a study of 949 British gamers, 52 per cent have been left feeling “disappointed” by the PS4, with 49 per cent of these citing the company’s inability to display the console’s form as a factor for their lack of enthusiasm.
“It was quite surprising that so many people admitted that they were disappointed with the PS4 announcement,” Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes who conducted the research said. “It would have been interesting to see a big reveal of what the console will look like but so far we only have the controller to go on.”
