PS4 and PS Vita bundle launching this year, priced at around $500?

Sony will be releasing a PS4 and PS Vita bundle priced at around $500 by the end of the year, highlighting the additional gaming power brought by the handheld console.

According to “a well-placed anonymous source”, Sony will be showcasing the value of its PS Vita handheld console by selling as part of a PS4 bundle this year.

Priced at a rather competitive $500 or potentially around £450 in the UK, the PS4 bundle would mean the PS Vita is offered at a huge discount.

Currently the PS Vita costs around £170 for the Wi-Fi only version, initially launching for £219. It has struggled to achieve commercial success due to its high cost, limited games library and the fact only select PS3 games support the Remote Play functionality.

However, Sony seems to be making sure the PS Vita will be a more viable handheld console by making Remote Play compatibility will be mandatory for all PS4 games.

“Yes, it’s true unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera,” said Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in a tweet. “It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita.”

All PS4 games will be able to be played remotely on the PS Vita, providing the PS4 is left turned on and connected to the internet. The games can then be streamed to the PS Vita over a Wi-Fi connection.

The Remote Play feature was one of the PS Vita’s top selling points, but until now has failed to attract a high enough level of developer support, despite it being a pretty attractive feature.

The PS4 will have bespoke video encoding software to enable screen-sharing support powered by Gaikai cloud gaming built-in. This means game developers will suffer no performance reductions when utilising the Remote Play feature.

Unfortunately, Sony has also said the PS Vita cannot double as an extra controller for the PS4, unless a games has been “specifically programmed” to do so.

Both the PS4 and the rumoured PS Vita bundle will be available this “holidays 2013” season.
