PS4 update 1.74 coming soon with stability improvements

Sony has announced that the 1.74 update for its PS4 console is coming soon, but it probably won't add any major new features.

The official Sony PlayStation Twitter account revealed that the update simply "improves stability of some software."

It seems as if the update will not include any of the major features that were promised, but not delivered, at the time of the console's initial unveiling in February last year.

PS4 users are still awaiting the resume and suspend feature that will allow them to boot up immediately and preserve game states for instant load times, for example.

Meanwhile, responses to the aforementioned post include requests from PS4 owners for 3D Blu-Ray compatibility, a PSN name change option, improved remote control support (the PS3 remote would be a good start), and the ability to upload music onto the console.

Such requests look likely to go unheeded in the immediate future, however, as the 1.74 update appears to be a pure bug-fixing exercise.

Still, this slow roll-out of promised features doesn't appear to be impacting PS4 sales at all. It continues to outsell the Xbox One in spite of the latter's radical culling of the bundled Kinect system and related price drop.

Recent figures suggest that Sony's latest console has outsold Microsoft's for each of the past six months.

Sony are liars update after update so called STABILITY UPDATES they think they can treat us like dirt because their console has better graphics than the xbox one.Well let me tell you they have a tonne more features and the system doesn't crash when you are playing games.I have had enough of this rubbish it's nearly a year and they have brought nothing good to the table so i am switching to xbox one.Oh and stuff you Sony i will never buy your products again.

I am pretty sure they also announced a feature where you can take over a friends game to help them if they are having problems with a level.

They really gotta get the ball rolling on their updates. It is the superior console but for some reason lacks something as simple as mp3 playback and a YouTube app

I've been waiting for the 3D BluRay support since they released the PS4. It's crazy that the PS3 does it but the PS4 doesn't. Now the XBox One plays 3D BluRay with their latest firmware, so Sony will probably have a fire under them since this is a SONY technology that now Microsoft supports and Sony doesn't.

Indeed. Watching active 3D on my plasma gives me the worst headache and eyestrain ever. Frankly it is a painful experience and in my view a waste of time

That's fine and dandy, but what everyone fails to see is that Sony and Microsoft have two different philosophies behind their products. Xbox want to be an all in one entertainment hub, and Sony want to the the most powerful gaming machine. How do you do that? You ensure the games run as smoothe as possible on your system. Apps and what not will come later in the systems life. But really though, what major updates has Microsoft brought to the table? Really think about that for a second. Now you say well Sony keeps coming out with stability updates, meanwhile everyone is claiming their games keep crashing. So what do you think k Sony is going to continue to do? Release stability updates. When the claims of games crashing ceases, Sony the console will evolve.
