Sony has announced the PS Vita handheld's sales figures. And they're not good. At 2.2 million since the device's launch, the future for the games console isn't looking good.

Sony has not spoken out publically a great deal to date about the sales of its latest handheld console, the PS Vita. Our suspicions have been confirmed - it was because the thing hasn't sold many units. Not many at all.

At the Gamescom conference, PlayStation Germany's Uwe Bassendowski revealed that the PS Vita has sold a depressingly lowly 2.2 million units worldwide. This is significantly fewer than any recent major handheld had sold at the same point in its lifecycle - even the so-so-selling 3DS had flogged 6.68m by this point, according to MCV.

To further dampen the limited excitement we have left for the technically impressive handheld's future, PlayStation Europe chief exec Jim Ryan went on to confirm at Gamescom that gaming integration with the PS3 is not going to play a big part in the development of the console.

Several titles have been made for both the Vita and PS3 platforms, such as Motorstorm RC, opening-up potential for neat "cross-over" gaming. However, Ryan says that "the development environments are rather different," suggesting we shouldn't expect too much PS3-Vita tag team action in the future.

The PS Vita was launched in the UK back in February, after breaking out in Japan in December 2011. What does the PS Vita need to succeed? Or is it already too late? Drop us your view in the comments.
