PS Vita Delayed Until 2012 In Europe And US

Oh deary me. It looks like there are going to be a lot of tears on Christmas morning this year when presents are opened and we find a woolly jumper waiting for us rather than the hoped-for PlayStation Vita.

Last week, things looked on track for the PS Vita when a leaked flyer from retailer Blockbuster claimed to show a release date of 28 October. Now however, a much more reliable source has said the PS Vita won’t be available in Europe or the US until “early next year.”

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai has been quoted as saying the European and American release for the next-gen portable gaming console has been delayed until 2012, although those lucky people in Japan should still get it in time for the “holiday season.”

Kaz Hirai PlayStation Vita Delay

At E3, at the beginning of June, Sony said the quad-core handheld would be coming “towards the end of 2011” and although it will be released somewhere this year, there will be many disappointed to have to wait until 2012 to get their hands on the console.

With Nintendo recently slashing the price of its 3DS console, some had suggested that this delay was due to Sony following suit and reducing the price of the PS Vita. Hirai rebuffed this suggestion and so we are still looking at paying around £229 for the console when it arrives in 2012.

Missing out on the Christmas market in Europe and the US is going to hit Sony hard and by the time we get our hands on the powerful handheld console, it will be a year since it was first announced at the end of January.

Why is it that Apple can release a product to most major markets two weeks after an announcement, whereas it takes Sony a year to do the same?

Becaus Apple does not announce products whilst they are still in R&D. Apple announces a product once it is developed, manufactured, shipped to retailers (in sufficient quantities, or not), etc. The fortnight to a month wait on Apple products is just to get the necessary reviews in, hype build up, etc.

I suspect the reason for this is that Sony doesn't give a crap about anyone other than it's home market and it diverting all their manufacturing output to satisfy Japanese predicted sales/pre-orders before sending anything elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure that's what they did with the PS3 and PS2 as well... The PS3 they even stripped out features when shipping outside their home market!

At least now we know it's probably because Sony wanted to give the new Wifi-less PSP some time to sell before making it obsolete with the Vita.

I mean seriously... Why announce and advertise the Vita then release another PSP??
