Oh deary me. It looks like there are going to be a lot of tears on Christmas morning this year when presents are opened and we find a woolly jumper waiting for us rather than the hoped-for PlayStation Vita.

Last week, things looked on track for the PS Vita when a leaked flyer from retailer Blockbuster claimed to show a release date of 28 October. Now however, a much more reliable source has said the PS Vita won’t be available in Europe or the US until “early next year.”

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai has been quoted as saying the European and American release for the next-gen portable gaming console has been delayed until 2012, although those lucky people in Japan should still get it in time for the “holiday season.”

At E3, at the beginning of June, Sony said the quad-core handheld would be coming “towards the end of 2011” and although it will be released somewhere this year, there will be many disappointed to have to wait until 2012 to get their hands on the console.

With Nintendo recently slashing the price of its 3DS console, some had suggested that this delay was due to Sony following suit and reducing the price of the PS Vita. Hirai rebuffed this suggestion and so we are still looking at paying around £229 for the console when it arrives in 2012.

Missing out on the Christmas market in Europe and the US is going to hit Sony hard and by the time we get our hands on the powerful handheld console, it will be a year since it was first announced at the end of January.
