Proper English Coming With Windows 8

The latest feature of Windows 8 to be unveiled by the Building Windows 8 blog, is making additional display languages available to all Windows users.

Since its introduction in Windows 2000, Multilingual User Interface (MUI) technology has allowed customers to install additional display languages on their Windows PCs and to switch between them. But it was not a very easy-to-use system and for the majority of users, the language they got when they booted up their PC for the first time was likely the one they were stuck with.

For users on this side of the globe, it meant that spellings such as ‘color’ and ‘favorites’ were always a source of chagrin, but thankfully, with Windows 8, this should be a thing of the past.

With Windows 8, users will be able to install additional display languages in a much easier way than is currently possible. You will be able to visit the new languages preferences section in Windows 8 to find and download whatever language takes your fancy. This is a much more elegant solution than the current fragmented way of doing things.

Microsoft will be offering 109 languages in Windows 8, 14 more than Windows 7 including the new UK version of English. “We are proud to announce the addition of English for the United Kingdom to the list of Windows display languages. We admit that this is something we should have done a long time ago,” admitted Microsoft's Ian Hamilton.

“Windows users in the UK have gotten by with the US English version of Windows, and while we Americans knew this was not their favourite, that is clearly no defence. We believe that this version of Windows will also be widely used in India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland and many other places.”
