Promo gaff sees HTC mix up the One M8 and One M9

When the HTC One M9 was unveiled earlier this month, the handset landed as a slightly underwhelming update on its predecessor, the HTC One M8.

With only minor design and specs differences helping separate the two devices, the M9 has failed to kick on HTC’s mobile efforts in the same way that the Galaxy S6 has pushed Samsung into new realms of smartphone supremacy.

Now, echoing consumers’ confusion, HTC has managed to mix up its two flagship devices in its latest marketing push, as spotted by Phandroid.

Looking to big-up the M9’s improved audio abilities, HTC recently took to its official Facebook page to promote the inbound device.

Unfortunately for the manufacturer, this is where its lack of handset homework showed it up, with an image of the M8 proudly displayed alongside the proclamation “#BoomSound and be there. #HTCOneM9.”

The gaff (below) was given away by the M8’s top-mounted power/lock key. This has moved to the phone’s right-hand edge on the M9.

Having been made aware of its error, HTC hastily removed the promo post.

Although visually similar, the M9 has adopted a slightly more angular, two-tone design than its predecessor.

Beneath the surface, the M9 has moved to an improved 20.7-megapixel primary camera and 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor while retaining the M8’s 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display.

Currently available for pre-order, the HTC One M9 will hit retailers this Tuesday, March 31.
