Google has launched the official Project Tango tablet developer kit, powered by Nvidia’s Tegra K1 processor.
This insanely powerful Project Tango tablet is only for developers for now, but this cutting-edge prototype gives us a glimpse at the future of mobile 3D sensing.
The tablet features a 7-inch display of unknown resolution, powered by the powerful Nvidia Tegra K1 processor and 4GB of RAM.
It runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat and offers Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity, but it’s the other internal hardware that really sets this slate apart from other tablets.
The front-facing camera has a 120-degree viewing angle and an additional 4-megapixel rear camera with 2 micrometre pixels, which is the same as the HTC One M8 UltraPixel sensor.
In the back there’s also a motion-tracking rear camera and an depth sensor that combine to create the interior 3D mapping.
“Fast-forwarding Google’s Project Tango from experimental device to developer kit, the tablet incorporates cameras optimised for computer vision, advanced sensor fusion algorithms and integrated depth sensing tools, as well as the Nvidia Tegra K1 mobile processor,” explained Nvidia. “As a result, it can understand space and motion the way humans do, enabling interior spaces to be quickly mapped in three dimensions, allowing the creation of applications that blend real and virtual objects.”
Google has opened up the register your interest page for the Project Tango tablet developer kit, but you’ll need to be a developer and fork out $1024 (£610) to get your hands on one.
“These developer kits are not a consumer device and will be available in limited qualities,” said Google.
