Project Morpheus launch may not happen until June 2016

The Project Morpheus release date may not occur until June 2016, according to a new report.

That’s according to Japanese publication Asahi (via Kotaku), which simply says it has heard from ‘sources’ that the headset won’t be ready for a consumer launch until the middle of next year.

The website was unable to say whether this long off date relates to the headset’s Japanese launch window or the worldwide release.

Of course, Sony is keeping schtum on this report for now and is sticking to the launch window outlined at GDC 2015 back in February.

It was there that Sony revealed the PS4-compatible Project Morpheus VR headset would arrive in “the first half of 2016”.

No further details, including a precise launch date or price were announced, but Sony did say it was “approaching the final consumer model”.

The latest Project Morpheus unit has a 5.7-inch OLED screen offering a 1920 x 1080p resolution and a new wider 100-degree viewing angle.

The biggest difference is the new 120Hz refresh rate though, which makes the viewing experience a lot more natural and comfortable for your brain and eyes.

Sony also upped the LED count on the new Project Morpheus from six to nine – one extra on the back and two additional on the front of the headset – that are tracked by the PlayStation camera.

The Project Morpheus’ two biggest competitors, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, have both been given loose launch windows too.

The HTC Vive is due to launch before Christmas 2015, while the Oculus Rift’s consumer launch is set for Q1 2016.

It’s looking more and more likely that both these devices will launch before the Project Morpheus.
