A senior Sony executive has confirmed what PlayStation 4 owners had already feared; adding a Project Morpheus VR headset to their gaming set up is not going to be cheap.
Speaking to Wired at the E3 2015 expo, Shuhei Yoshida said the headset will cost gamers “several hundred dollars” on top of their existing system.
The president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios said: “
Yoshida says the key to convincing those new-gen gamers to double down on the cost of their system, rather than seeking out the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive, will be the plethora of games currently in development.
He added: “And more gaming content is what will convince them [to buy]. We have 30 or more games being developed that we are tracking—not all of them will come out at launch, but there are serious efforts being made on all of them.”
Like the Rift and the Vive, Sony’s solution will arrive in the first half of 2016. Whereas Facebook-owned Oculus seems to have a much broader focus, the makers of Morpheus and the HTC Vive will do battle primarily in the gaming space.
However, what Sony means by “several hundred” remains to be seen. Gamers will hope that it’s as low as $300, but it’s entirely conceivable will charge upwards of $500 for its incarnation of the VR technology.
