ADI’s multi-talented I700 can be configured as a PC monitor, a gaming display, a USB hub or a TV.
ADI has started to ship its recently announced MicroScan I700 display. The I700 is a 17in LCD with a native resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 and a contrast ratio of 400:1. It’s housed in a brushed aluminium bezel and features an adjustable stand that can be raised, lowered or swivelled vertically up to an angle of 90 degrees.
However, what’s unique about the MicroScan I700 are the ‘Feature Boxes’ that attach to the front of the stand.
As standard the I700 comes with a Feature Box that houses a four-port USB 2.0 hub. This also integrates two speakers that feature SRS WoW technology – which should sound a lot better than the usual tinny built-in affairs. However, the hot swappable box can be removed and replaced with one of two other Feature Boxes, available as optional extras.
One integrates an analogue TV Tuner, and comes with a remote control, turning the I700 into a fully-fledged flat panel television. This TV Tuner box can be found online for around £80.
The second box integrates a digital card reader. This enables digital camera users to display images on the panel without having to use a PC. The reader supports Compact Flash, SD and MMC cards, as well as Sony’s Memory stick.
The I700 also sets itself apart by featuring an S-Video input. This means you can hook it up to a number of devices such as a DVD player, or a games console. However, in the future ADI intends to offer an additional Feature Box with a built-in DVD player.
Clearly the options and inputs on the I700 make it much more flexible than a regular LCD panel and its going to have to cope with a lot of fast moving images. That being the case, some might be surprised by the quoted response time figure of 25ms.

We raised this with ADI’s Product Manager Rob Atkinson, who stated that, “Many people fixate on the response time figure but we believe that there’s much more to a good LCD panel than that number alone. We think that 99 per cent of people who use the I700 will be more than happy with its performance – especially with fast moving images.”
The ADI MicroScan I700 is certainly an interesting monitor and you can find more information at www.adiuk.com. The display, with the USB hub and speakers, is available now for a street price of £346. Check www.dealtime.co.uk for the best price.
