The Note 3 could soon be replaced by a metal clad Note 4

Samsung reportedly has big plans for its next-gen phablet, with the eagerly awaited device to come in two iterations, one a premium, metal bodied flexible offering.

While the standard Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is expected to continue the manufacturer’s disappointing insistence on pumping out cheap feeling plastic handsets, a second ‘premium’ model will reportedly check a number of more high-end tick boxes.

Citing unnamed “industry sources,” latest reports out of Samsung’s native Korea have claimed that the premium Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will touch down later this year with a bevy of headline grabbing features, including a flexible display, metal case and an optical image stabilised camera.

Although it is not currently clear how exactly Samsung would make a flexible display work with a rigid metal body, the manufacturer is said to have increased yield rates of flexible screens by 50 per cent since last year’s Samsung Galaxy Round release.

With Samsung having pushed a number of software improvements on  recent flagship phones – think eye tracking and tilt to scroll – it has been suggested that the manufacturer is now looking to ‘catch up’ on hardware innovation.

Part of this push will be to move to more premium construction materials.

“To highlight the luxurious feel, a metal case is adopted,” the reports said of the premium Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note 3 follow-on will reportedly be crafted from a combination of metals, including aluminium, magnesium and stainless steel.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is widely expected to be released ahead of IFA 2014 at a dedicated launch event on September 3.

It is believed the device will run the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor alongside 3GB of RAM, Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS and a 16-megapixel rear-mounted camera.
