popSLATE is a new IndieGoGo project that aims to put a second screen on the back your iPhone.
The popSLATE idea was hatched by Greg Moon and Yasha Behzadi, who reasoned that there was a market for using low-power, customisable e-ink screens for personalising objects – and realised that the back of a smartphone is generally a large, flat and mostly unused area that would make a perfect site for such a screen.
popSLATE will be designed for the iPhone 5 and use an e-ink screen similar to those seen on Kindle devices. These only use power when they change (hence the Kindle’s long battery life), so they can be left on even when the phone is in standby or sleep mode. So essentially, popSLATE allows users to add a picture to the back of their phone, changing it whenever they see fit using an app.
The case will take power from the iPhone 5 using its Lightning connector, and will use the phone’s accelerometer to detect touches, allowing it to work as a touchscreen, albeit a slightly more primitive one than most users will be accustomed to.
Moon and Behzadi’s IndieGoGo goal is $150,000, and at the time of writing popSLATE has gathered almost a third of that, with 47 days left to get the rest.
