PlayStation Vue hits first major bump as web TV realities set in

Sony has announced its fledgling PlayStation Vue TV streaming service will no longer offer access to channels from under the vast Viacom content umbrella.

That means no Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Spike TV.

Sony says its decision will enable it to “continue to offer the most compelling value to our fans,” which suggests Viacom was asking for a pretty penny to retain access to its channels

Sony prefaced the news by announcing it was adding BBC America and NBA TV to its cord-cutting platform with broadcast stations from CBS and Fox also on the way.

However, the loss of Viacom content will be a blow to subscribers seeking to replace their cable subscription with a complete and affordable web-based solution.

The company has been gradually moving towards that reality since bringing it out of limited beta earlier this year.

The firm added ESPN, ABC and Disney networks as well as support for Showtime and HBO. It also enabled PlayStation Vue on Android TV, Roku iOS, Android, PC and Mac as well as the PlayStation consoles.

It’s a shame that at a time of mass addition to the service there’s a loss that will affect a wide customer base.

“As demonstrated by the new channels announced today, we will continue to expand the PlayStation Vue service by adding devices and networks that are highly requested by our fans,’ Sony said in the blog post.
