PlayStation Now launched as Gaikai-based cloud gaming service

Sony has launched the PlayStation Now cloud gaming service, based on Gaikai technology.

The PlayStation Now service is based on Gaikai technology that Sony acquired in 2012, and will offer PlayStation games outside of the console boundaries.

You’ll be able to stream PlayStation titles from the original PlayStation right up to the new PS4, directly to your PS3 and PS4 system initially.

PS Vita compatibility will be added later and the majority of 2014 Sony Bravia TV models will support PlayStation Now from the outset.

“Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices,” explains Sony.

Similar to the way you can stream TV content, you’ll be able to play and access your PlayStation Now content from multiple devices, simply picking up where you left off.

As the games are stored in the PlayStation Now cloud you’ll always be playing the most up to date version of the game, with software updates happening in the background without you knowing.

All you’ll need to do is sign into your Sony Entertainment Network account on any device to carry on gaming.

“We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.”

Although PlayStation Now will initially only be available in the US, Sony may well expand its availability to the rest of the world and its respective PlayStation fans.

The PlayStation Now beta will start in the US in January, with a full American roll-out expected by summer.
